My mother recently spent a number of weeks in the St Barts intensive care unit following major surgery. The care and commitment from the doctors and surgeons were excellent. Some of the nursing staff were excellent. One female nurse was particularly unprofessional in her crude comments spoken loudly within earshot about the personal lives of doctors and those of patients’ relatives. This nurse seemed to spend many hours doing this rather than working. As a taxpayer I felt this was a huge waste of taxpayer’s money and this nurse seemed to think that she was unaccountable. I discussed this behaviour with my relatives who are consultants and doctors. There should be much closer supervision of staff conduct at a higher level than that of a senior nurse.
