"The treatment of my father who is 99"

About: Devon Doctors Ltd Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / General surgery

(as a relative),

My father has mild dementia, so is active at night.

One night he pulled out his sub-pubic catheter and it had been out too long for the District Nrse to replace. He was taken to RD&E (Exeter). He was on the acute surgery ward and I was told that they were unable to replace the catheter and sent him home with a conten catheter, which had fallen off before he got home (by ambulance - he cannot walk and has to be moved by hoist and chair).

At night when he relaxes is when the catheter bag fills up so in the morning he was soaked up to his armpits in urine. He constantly "leaks" during the day so is constantly wet.

It was Wednesday he was seen, on Saturday I contacted Devon Drs as Dads skin is very weak and the live in carer was very concerned that it was deteriorating. Devon Drs were excellent and tried to get my father into hospital, but we were told there were no beds. There is not a bed available until this coming Friday from the 11th to the 20th September, so for 10 days my father is going to be sitting in urine the whole time.

Why could another hospital other than the RD& E not have been contacted?Everyone says it is inhumane treatment that my father is receiving.
