"Caring, dignity, pride and all at 100mph and no..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

Anything else?

Arriving at A&E in difficult circumstances and then working our way from there to Linnet and now onto Saturn gives me as a carer looking after a patient a great insight into how the "system" works as I have been staying here as well Firstly they say you leave your dignity at the door when you come to hospital, well not here as the doctors and nurses all make such an effort to personalise everything, asking if they can come in, respectful and caring. Little details are remembered and smiles are wide and bright often in difficult situations. The thing that amazes me is this is all done at 100mph - its clear that staff numbers are carefully orchestrated to minimise cost and whilst I understand that rational the nurses work load with paperwork / patients and caring is at full speed and leave little room for pulling in for a cuppa. Would I make any changes? of course given the budget but you can only deal with what you have and make the best, these angels do exactly that and whilst I am sure they have a private moan it never surfaces on the wards. The biggest issue looking from the outside is the accountability where the tiniest detail needs recording yet the "system" involves filling in numerous forms and is so time consuming. Nurses need to nurse and Managers need to manage but at 100mph it would be interesting to see just how the Managers perform, probably not half as well as our angels. Would I recommend the GWH, without a doubt top marks for a top job.

Thank you so much for letting us know about your positive experiences with us. I'll make sure your comments are fed back to the teams in A&E, Linnet and Saturn wards. I'm sure they'll be delighted. We are currently investing £1m in recruiting additional nurses, which we hope will give nurses the time to be even more involved in providing direct nursing care.
