I had to go for an ultrasound on my thyroid as my ENT consultant told me I had a lump in it and I could feel it when I swallow. Me and my boyfriend waited patiently until we were called by a nurse. The nurse got my name wrong so I corrected them whilst smiling and they just turned away. My boyfriend was not allowed in at first. I was waiting in the room for five minutes with the nurse and was nervous. The nurse had their back turned away from me the whole time and did not say one word to me or spark up a polite conversation to make me feel more at ease. When the Doctor came in they were very nice and friendly and told me everything that was going to happen and allowed my boyfriend to come in with me. After the ultrasound we were told to wait 45 minutes to have a biopsy on the nodule which consisted of a numbing needle then three needles to take samples of the nodule. We went for food then came back 45 minutes later and waited an extra 20 minutes before we were seen. I got told to lie down on the bed, the room was very cold. The Doctor explained what they were going to do then banged the table they were going to use into my feet which made me laugh a bit. I was very nervous and they had to tell me to slow my heart rate down before inserting the needle. I calmed down and after cleaning my neck very well they inserted the numbing needle then the first needle almost straight after, it made me jump as I could feel everything. The next needle did not feel so bad. On the third needle they accidentally scratched across my chin with the needle which then started bleeding but they cleaned it up and apologised then asked if I was OK at which point I told them yes and to carry on. Their faces were stern when I looked at them which made me feel a bit uncomfortable considering my chin had just been cut, I would have felt much better if I was looking at smiling faces throughout the procedure. It would have helped my nerves and helped me to calm down. I left that day with two plasters rather than one, I felt like I was a kid again.
