"Hi,I had occasion to drop my daughter ..."

About: Royal Preston Hospital

(as a relative),

What could be improved

Hi,I had occasion to drop my daughter off for treatment at the hospital on Saturday and was appalled at the state of the outside area infront of the main entrance doors. It was covered with cigarette ends and litter and although there where very large No Smoking signs there was a patient in her bed attire leaning against the wall smoking.

Patients should be advised that on admission to hospital they will not be allowed to leave hospital premises until they have been discharged, and that security will be at exits to implement this rule. This would be advantageous in minimising germs brought into the hospital

The Trust employs staff to enforce the smoking ban and urges patients and visitors to use the smoking shelters. The area is regularly cleaned but as the main thoroughfare through the hospital it is very busy and althpugh waste bins are provided, litter remains a problem.

All patients are required to ask permission before leaving a ward for a smoking break.
