"Great care following Septoplasty"

About: Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital

Anything else?

I was admitted to Ward C in September 2013 for Septoplasty and polyp removal. Despite an initial wait of an hour or so after admission I met with 2 anaesthetists and a surgeon, all of whom were more than willing to sit down with me and tell me what to expect and discuss any concerns I had. The nursing staff were very friendly and helpful, and with a very good attitude, always smiling which I imagine would go a long way to helping relieve any nerves some people may have. My post op care carried on as before. My only criticism of the whole day would be the food. I was given hot soup and a hot meal and then told I have to wait until it is cold before I can eat it as hot food would promote bleeding. Since this must be a regular occurrence in an ENT specialist unit surely it would be more practical to offer a cold salad and ice cream? Especially given that we ate then asked to eat ice to reduce blood flow. All in all, I has a pleasant experience given the circumstances and would like to pass on my thanks to all the staff who helped make it so.

Response from Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital

Thank you for the feedback regarding your recent experience on C Ward which has been shared with our team. I'm glad to hear that staff took the time to discuss the procedure with you and were both caring and helpful while you were with us. With regard to our meal provision, we have recently reviewed the options we have available and will soon be able to offer a new, wider range for patients to choose from. However on the day of your procedure, you should have been offered the cold options we currently have available which does include sandwiches and salads. I'm sorry that didn't happen. We will ensure both hot and cold options are appropriately offered to patients. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
