"Fertility appointment"

About: The Princess Royal Hospital (Telford)

Anything else?

We had an appointment on 02.09.13 which was booked for us 3 weeks ago by the egg share co ordinator at Shrewsbury. We didnt know what was going to happen at this appointment but after we had been refused egg share we were told we could have IVF and this appointment was with the consultant to discuss this. The appointment was changed from 16.40 to 16.10 the previous week due to a doctor being sick, we arrived at 16.00 only to still be waiting an hour later so this was over the original appointment time as well. We were called in only for the consultant to sit there looking through my notes over and over then to ask where we are in the process and what we want to do next. I was amazed that we were again asked this when surely he is the professional and should be advising us. My husband replied that we want to move forward to the next step in the process which is now going to be IVF, the consultant replied that we need to consider IVF and the NHS will no longer help us which we already knew. This is all information which we were aware of hence why we were going to egg share. We asked him why we were there at this appointment because he hadnt actually done anything or told us anything. He said he didnt know why we were there either. We feel this appointment was a waste of time and considering we waited 3 weeks for this appointment we are no further forward in the IVF process. The consultant was very unhelpful (this is the second time we have seen him and the second time he has asked what we what to do next) , we knew we have to have private IVF and was hoping to now be having treatment but instead we are going round in circles and jumping through hoops to even get help and advice. It seems like he isnt interested in helping us and we have to do everything ourselves. I was very frustrated with this appointment as we havent got anything out of it and in the end because he was not giving any assistance I left. We felt he was rude, unhelpful and not interested in us at all, i would like someone to explain to us what the process is for private IVF as we are getting no where. Surely if we are going to pay then we can have a consultant appointment to get started and be moving forward.

Now, this sounds like we needed to do a better job of communication about the different processes for NHS and private referrals. Our consultants need to make sure that their private work is kept absolutely separate from their NHS-funded work and it does not sound like this was communicated with you. We have shared this with the service so that they can do better in future.
