"laparoscopic operation - day surgery"

About: West Middlesex University Hospital

Anything else?

Just had a keyhole hernia operation yesterday & it went very well. I was impressed with the day surgery ward which was very clean, modern & felt quite private. The staff were all nice & quite reassuring. I walked myself 2 the operating block which scared me a little bit but at least I could make a conscious judgement of the operating theatre. After I lied down I was given the anaesthesia & an oxygen mask was held over my face. That's the last I remember. When I woke up I was back in the ward & felt very sleepy & lethargic. It took me a while 2 wake up properly even though the staff offered me some tea & a sandwich. A doctor came & said the operation went well but didn't give me any details. I was told the surgeon would come & visit me but I never saw him. At 19:30, I was still sleeping the staff told me that the ward closes at 20:00 & I should get ready. The discharge process was expedient & I certainly could not grasp everything they said especially about changing my dressings or cleaning, nor was there any arrangement about follow-up appointment. Although I was glad that it was over and went well and was going home, it left me a little flat. It is a shame because that spoilt an otherwise very good impression. A day later I am feeling some discomfort if not deal pain & as I read others say,the most difficult is getting in & out of bed. Constipation seems 2 be an issue possibly because of the gas they injected for the operation. Else, I'm already quite mobile. Hopefully it will be a success... Terry.
