"Appalling Care - a disgrace to the Nursing..."

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

Anything else?

I have been outraged and disgusted with the appalling care my 85year old mother has received on the Care of the Elderly ward E51. I left her at 4.15pm after visiting and she was settled and happy in her chair waiting for her tea. When I arrived for visiting at 6pm I was shocked that my mother was in her bed, distressed and crying and her bed was wet through. There were no nurses to be seen and we took my mother to the toilet, washed, changed her and remade her bed. My mother is not incontinent but her mobility is poor so she does need assistance to the toilet. She does not appear to get help with this, the nursing staff just leave the patients to "wet themselves". Her notes said that she declined her tea but on many occasions we have brought her food which she has eaten. We have also witnessed horrendous care provided to other inpatients over the past few weeks. Tonight an elderly lady "begged" me to get her a nurse because she wanted to go to the toilet. The two people who came tried to tell the lady she didn't need the toilet because she had a catheter. However the lady insisted she needed the toilet and the penny dropped with the two assistants that the lady may need her bowels moved. They heled her to the toilet and left her there for 45 minutes. Disgraceful. Another lady in the ward said she had been sat at the side of her bed since 6.30am and had asked many times if her bed could be made up so she could rest on it. The bed was not made up when we left at 8pm. Patients and relatives are scared to say anything incase of reprisals. This is just a snapshot of many examples of bad nursing care we have witnessed. However to end on a good note there is a caring male staff nurse who treats the elderly with kindness compassion and dignity. Thank you.
