"Long wait to see consultant about potential skin cancer"

About: Devon Access and Referral Team (DART) Seaton Hospital

(as the patient),

I have been referred by my GP to a Dermatologist for a probable skin cancer lesion called a basal cell carcinoma. I had one of lesion removed in February 2010.

The earliest appointment by DART to see Dr G H Pitt GPSI-Dermatology is in late October at Seaton Hospital. This is a much longer time to wait for an appointment than last time. I would have thought that the danger of getting full blown skin cancer deserves an earlier appointment.

Meanwhile I shall be worrying about my condition over the next 9 weeks.

Thank you for getting in touch to let us know your concerns and I’m sorry that you have been worried.

I have checked with a GP and I have been assured that a basal cell carcinoma is a very slow growing lesion that does not require an urgent appointment and it is usual for BCCs to be referred routinely.

If you are still concerned, I would advise contacting your GP and discussing the matter with him/her as I’m sure they would not want you to be worried.

I have just checked and there are some appointments in Exeter during September and early October so if you were willing/able to get to Exeter instead of Seaton, please contact us and, if the appointments are still available, we will be happy to rearrange it for you.
