"Consultant didn't make himself available to answer my questions"

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as a carer),

My wife was taken back into Southampton General Hospital by Paramedics after a stomach hernia operation with an infection and high temperature. She was on a ward for nearly 2 weeks before being discharged. In that time I went to the hospital every day to see her.

She was seen by goodness knows how many different staff during that time. Just before a bank holiday weekend, my wife was finally seen by the original consultant who performed the operation.

Would he let me ask any questions or stay behind the curtain while he saw my wife for at least 2 minutes? No. He told me to wait in the corridor and to this day I never saw him again even though I wanted to ask a couple of questions. After all, she is my wife. I felt this was arrogant and rude.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am sorry that your experience of communication was poor. We will ensure that your comments are fed back to the consultant lead for that area for onward cascade and reflection of relevant staff..
