On Monday 19 August 2013, I had reason to attend the Minor Injuries Unit at Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital and I came away extremely impressed, what an excellent service throughout. I had injured my calf muscle 11 days previously, my leg and foot were still badly swollen and painful and it was not getting any better, which worried me. I considered trying to make an appointment to see my GP which would have been frustrating and time consuming and any appointment would probably have been anything up to a week later. I knew my injury was not suitable for A&E as it was not an emergency. I checked online and found that it was indeed a 'walk-in' unit for just this type of injury. I went to reception and was greeted in a happy friendly way and given a queue number. Shortly after my details were taken. Shortly after that I was seen by a nurse. From arrival to being seen was under an hour. The nurse was very professional, very knowledgeable and very reassuring. She gave my leg a thorough examination, explained exactly what she thought was happening and why and put me at my ease. She suggested treatment and made the neccessary arrangments on the spot. She also looked at an issue I had on my hand and gave equally thorough and professional advice on that too. I came away very impressed with the MIU and the hospital. Everyone I met was happy, kind, helpful, chatty and very good at their job. The process from recepton to nurse was well thought out and efficient. The concept of a 'walk-in' centre is excellent. Minor injuries, by their nature, need looking at quickly and a walk-in centre is a logical response to that need. The opening times are also very sensible and meet the needs of working people as they open 9am-9pm every day. Thank you to my nurse and to the ladies at Reception. Well done on an excellent service. Brian Henslow. MD, The Roffen Club, Rochester.
