"Six hour wait to be discharged"

(as the patient),

I want to stress that the nursing staff at the County Hospital are very caring and do superb work in spite of the fact that there are not enough nurses.

In the past two years I have had a laparotomy, cardiac treatment and pacemaker fitted and two weeks ago a knee replacement and have had excellent treatment from paramedics, A end E and wards.

It is the discharge procedure that I feel really should be looked into. I had a six hour wait.

Dear pensioner Mary - thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback; it was good to hear that over your many visits the care has been good; however I can appreciate your dissatisfaction with discharge arrangements. We are aware of this being a regular issue raised by patients and mainly due to waiting for either medications or transport. Please be assured that we are aware and are working on the problems - more recently patients were waiting for a doctor review before going home and this has now been mostly resolved through new ways of working; now our pharmacy departments are working closely with the wards to make sure discharge decisions are known across the team, orders are put in promptly etc. We have a lot of work to do and a variety or projects under way so whilst I hope you do not need to visit us again should you have to you will start to see a difference. Also you'll be pleased to hear that we are investing £3 million pounds this year in more nursing staff which is excellent and recruitment is under way!
