"My son and his needs - ADHD services in Dorset"

About: Dorset County Hospital / Paediatrics

(as the patient),

My son was diagnosed as having ADHD after several years of raising concerns with many different agencies. On the diagnosis services were scarce from CAMHS, we battled every day with our sons anger and aggression to the brink of us almost placing him into care. At 14 he was excluded from education, once out of the system everyone tended to forget he existed as there was no support programmes in place to help him and we as his carers. At 16 his education ceased full stop and no health services looking at tranferring him into the adult mental health teams. We had to pay out privately for assessments and treatment, he was then diagnosed as having Aspergers. Why can this be allowed to happen? Why are our children being failed? and why had it taken 16 years and at a cost to ourselves both mentally and financially before our son was diagnosed with dual diagnosis of ADHD/ASD. We feel our son has been failed by the very system set up to meet his needs and we as his carers. This is not a singular case, I hear the same experiences from other parents and it is heart breaking to see our children's life being destroyed. Help our children by providing the appropriate health care they so deperately need and require. See related comment
