"Consulant was excellent in answering my queries"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

My health issue is that I have osteoarthritis in both knees.

My initial appointment was cancelled the day before I was due to attend and when I was given a new one, it was for a disappointing 5 weeks later.

On the day, the hospital card parks (RSH) were crowded and the space I finally found was a considerable walking distance away from the clinic, so I was in a lot of pain by the time I got there.

The clinic was also crowded and the waiting room had very little ventilation on an extremely hot day which was very uncomfortable. Although the x-rays on my legs were done shortly after my arrival, my 10: 40 appointment with the consultant did not take place until 11: 50.

The consultation was very satisfactory, my condition and remedial action being explained clearly and sympathetically by the consultant and his registrar. They were also excellent in answering my queries and I feel confident as a result that my future treatment will be successful.

They explained the anomalies surrounding the waiting list so I have to hope that I will be one of the lucky ones who don't have to wait as long for treatment as they inferred I may have to.

Response from Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

I am really sorry to hear that your appointment was cancelled the day before it was due. This must have been so frustrating and clearly we need to do more to reduce the risk of cancellation (sometimes it is unfortunately unavoidable, for example due to sickness absence, but we can and must do more to keep cancellations to a minimum). Your experience is also a useful reminder for all of us in the NHS to find ways to offer more services in community settings to reduce the need to travel to hospital. This is not appropriate for all appointments, but if you would like to share your experience and your hopes for the future as part of the big debate taking place across the county then please contact your local GP commissioner and complete their questionnaire (http://www.shropshireccg.nhs.uk/call-to-action).
