"My therapist gave me a new lease of life and has literally taught me a new way to think"

About: Inclusion Matters Sefton

(as the patient),

I am 39, and for 17 years I have suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder for intrusive thoughts and feelings.

It was only until this point in time that I have managed to make sense of why I have these thoughts and how I can manage them through learning and practicing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques.

Through the years, I have suffered quite a few serious breakdowns and depressions because of my OCD and natural tendency towards depression. I have been placed under care of quite a few psychiatrists, therapists and doctors; but sadly, each time I have fallen through the net of being given a chance of real help through this therapy. I have asked for it over the years, but have time and time again faced refusal.

My last breakdown happened over the recent Christmas, and it was the worst yet. I have never been closer to suicide than I was at that point. After demanding a new approach - literally - from the mental health team at Fozakerly Hospital - I was finally referred.

I only wish I could have been given this help many years ago, as I could have lived a fuller life.

My therapist was fantastic and second to none. She gave me a new lease of life and has literally taught me a new way to think. I still have some way to go, but I am finally on the mend.

This therapy should be considered before all medication!

Response from Elizabeth Forrest, CBT Therapist, Inclusion Matters

Dear Nails269,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback.

I was sorry to read that it has been such a struggle for you over the years to access the treatment you needed. I am glad that things are now changing for you though and that you feel things are 'on the mend'.

I hope your feedback will encourage others struggling with OCD and depression to ask their GP for a referral to Inclusion Matters.

Best wishes for the future,

Elizabeth Lovell
