"My thoughts on the stoma service"

About: Adult community services / Stoma prescription service

(as the patient),

I use the stoma service and they are very prompt and quick with their supplies. I started using the service in 2004 and they have added an additional step to the process since I started. Before I could phone the supplier and they got my prescription from the surgery. My surgery didn't seem to like this and now I phone the stoma service and they contact the supplier on my behalf. One question I do have is about the people I speak to. Are they medical people or simply clerical? They ask me how things are and I never know how detailed I should be in my answers. If they are medically qualified, then it could stop the need for an appointment as I could discuss my concerns over the phone. I haven't seen my stoma nurse for a while.

Dear Stoma625, thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion, we really appreciate your feedback on the Stoma Prescription Service and are pleased to hear that you have found the service to be prompt with supplies.

In answer to your question, the telephone lines are staffed by prescription co-ordinators. The coordinators have undergone specialist product training and have a BTEC qualification in Stoma & Continence customer support. They are not nurses but they do have extensive product knowledge and are able to assist patients in clinical matters by liaising with a range of clinicians on behalf of the patient or organising appointments with clinicians as appropriate.

If patients have concerns relating to their stoma, they can discuss these with the prescription coordinator who will be able to advise the most appropriate course of action.

With best wishes,

Kerry
