I was admitted for a kidney infection.. Spent a long wait in a still blood soaked a and e ward with my curtains persistently open, battling to get attention to even be able to go to the bathroom. (In the end i gave up and took myself by carrying my own drip.. despite feeling extrmely woozy and having extremely low blood pressure)After a lack of beds being available I was wheeled drip still in into a waiting room in the MAU where I sat for hours holding up my own drip, still after 10 hours, no offer of a drink, any more pain relief or any attempt to converse or even acknowledge my existence, until I was seen by a doctor who proceeded to give me no further information on my bloods result, after I had been seen my mother had to insist that my IV was changed as recommended by an earlier doctor and it was hung from a nail in the wall in the waiting room. My whole experience was extremely upsetting, thinking about if I was, and witnessing older, and vulnerable patients being treated with the same disregard as myself. The general attitude and manner of the staff were appalling, I felt as if I were and inconvenience, not a patient whom they were trying to help. I felt as if my privacy and dignity were also disregarded, at no point was I allowed to rest in a same sex or semi private space. It did not only upset me, but also was commented on how appalling it was to see me holding up my own drip sat for hours in a waiting room.

If you would like to discuss your comments further then please do get in touch via our PALS team on freephone 0800 783769. I can tell you that we have ordered new drip stands; one for each bed space. We have also shared your comments with the departments so they can look into some of the concerns you have raised. We have also introduced a new role of emergency department assistants. Their focus is on feeding patients and this along with a new snack system which has been introduced should help ensure nutrition is given the priority it deserves. Thank you for raising the concerns.
