"Children's ED finger injury"

My son had recently trapped his finger on to a closing door recently and we attended children's emergency department to be checked whether it was fractured or not. The nursing staff at reception were very kind and had attended to him straight away giving him painkillers.

We then had to wait for nearly 2 hours and during this time we were not given any idea about how long we would need to wait. The department was very busy but it would have been nice if there was a system in place like an electronic board with your check in number and approx waiting time. (A bit like when you buy something from Argos).

Anyway once we saw the doctor he had sent us for an Xray. Thankfully we didn't have to wait for long, but it would probably better use of our time to have gone for an Xray while we were waiting. Thankfully the Xray did not show a fracture and we got discharged home. Overall we are very happy with the care we received in terms of the nursing and medical care however I think our experience would have been better if the system was a bit more efficient and with better communication particularly about waiting times

Your suggestions and feedback regarding how we communicate the waiting times in the department are greatly appreciated. We have recently introduced a similar system to that you suggest in our adult Emergency Department (ED) in response to patient feedback and will consider whether we can do something similar in our children’s ED.
