"Care of terminally ill parents"

About: East Surrey Hospital

Anything else?

I have never, until now, felt compelled to offer an opinion on a subject widely discussed in the press. The NHS for the most part, gets an unfair portrayal of how, in my experience and opinion, it looks after people. From personal experience ESH in Redhill provided my Mum and Dad care to the end that I felt was dignified and looked after their final needs. The nurses new and understood completely the situation and dealt with us with care and honesty. The NHS provides such a great service for the most part and I truly believe this needs to be recognised as how on earth must the staff feel when all they see is headlines saying how poorly its being run. Never have I seen a headline offering congratulations to a hospital / NHS for providing such good care and treatment, its always bad news, never good. We have also had two children at ESH Redhill and the care there was good, it wasn't perfect but I feel the maternity nurses in the end provided excellent care under enormous pressures. They were clearly under stress through lack of staff but they coped. For my part and my pennies worth, my thanks to you all.

Dear James Mckee

First of all apologies for the delay in responding to your post about East Surrey Hospital.

Many thanks for taking the time to write so positively about the hospital and the NHS in general.

As you say sometimes we need to praise staff more and recognise all the excellent things they do - day in, day out. But it is vital that we ensure that everyone always has the high quality experince that you have had and by sharing patient stories in this way I think we help to achieve that ambition.

Kind regards

Ian
