"Cataract surgery"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

Anything else?

I had cataracts in both eyes treated in February and April this year. I am totally satisfied with the medical treatment I received and the results have been excellent. My criticism is the difficulty that I had in getting a follow-up appointment after the first operation, which should take place 3-4 weeks after surgery. At one stage I was told I was on a general waiting list of several thousand and it could be months rather than weeks. I was advised to visit my optician to ascertain whether I was safe to drive, essential for my job. The delay also meant I wasn't on the waiting list to have the second op. As I found the situation unacceptable I contacted PALS and they were excellent. They arranged for the appointments officer to ring me that day and an appointment was made for later in the same week.

Thank you for posting your feedback and for giving our Ophthalmology Service a five star rating. We can only apologise for the difficulties you had in arranging a follow up appointment. You are quite right when you say follow up appointment normally happen within four weeks but this can sometimes be longer. Our eye clinic is extremely popular for patients in the Black Country: last year we saw more than 30,000 patients. To cope with demand, our consultants run a clinic on a Saturday, and we are currently advertising for another doctor to work in the department. We are pleased the team in our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) were able to help you with your follow up appointment. If they can give you any further assistance, don’t hesitate to call them on free phone 0800 073 0510.
