"Care in Ward 2 Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

on 4th July, my sister and I went to visit our mum in Victoria Hospital Fife. We are both nurses in another health board area. Our mum had been admitted with chest pain the previous night- although she has a medical condition she was in the surgical ward due to bed capacity.

We were so impressed with the lovely clean bright environment, clear signage and directions.

When we arrived at the ward we were given a nice welcome.

The most impressive thing however was that the nurse (Kirsty) looking after my mum came to speak with us - without us having to ask. She very clearly kept us up to date with what had been happening, making sure to include my mum in discussion. We were very reassured that this nurse had a good understanding of my mum's needs and we left knowing the plan and clear information about what would happen next. The nurse showed care and compassion plus great communication skills. My mum has been in hospital frequently and this is the first time we have been asked "is there anything we should know about your mums care at home or do you have any concerns? "

The only improvement we could suggest would be more pillows in ward as some other patients only had one..

Thankyou- please pass on to staff involved.

Dear Mary

Thank you for taking the time to comment following your mum's recent hospital attendance. We recognise that hospitals can be stressful environments for patients and their relatives and equally recognise the value of staff communicating clearly and effectively. It is great that Kirsty showed genuine compassion and took the time to communicate, which is a real example of the person centred approach we are aiming to promote. Your comments about the environment are also welcome and I will take great pleasure in passing these on to all the relevant staff.

I am glad that you mentioned the pillows, as this should be something we can resolve easily. Again I will make sure your comments are passed on and ask that this be reviewed.

Kind Regards
