"mental health - dementia patient"

About: King George Hospital

Anything else?

I have to concur with a previous reviewer so far - my friend only went in yesterday. phoned to find out ward he is in. in MAU but person who answered although gave info on his status said he had been aggressive (he is 81 yrs old and suffering dementia and confusion - he had been in A&E since 2pm that day and it was 8pm at night so he would have been exhausted from being in a cubicle in A&E because he had only just been put in MAU. Despite me saying "he has dementia and is a symptom of it - aggression - and he is a very nice man when more relaxed", I was met with silence on the phone. really disgusted with attitude so far and worried about what treatment he will get if he stays in there.

I’m sorry to hear that you had concerns about the attitude of staff. This is unacceptable and I will follow this up with the department. Improving the care of people with dementia is a high priority for us. We are introducing elderly care specialists into our Emergency Departments and supporting Medical Assessment Unit and fast-tracking their admission into specialist wards where their needs will be understood and better met. We are also improving training for staff so that they understand the impact dementia can have on people, such as being disorientated and even aggressive if they are confused, and how we can care for them more effectively. We have also recently introduced the Butterfly Scheme, which enables staff to identify patients with memory problems so that there specific care needs can be met. This is being rolled out into our MAU areas. I do hope that your friend received good care while he was with in our hospital. If you have any further concerns or would like to talk to us about his experience in A&E, please contact us on 01708 435454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk. Yours sincerely Flo Panel-Coates Director of Nursing
