"Can't leave message!"

I have tried to leave a message for a doctors secretary. When reaching the extension it asks for the persons id number or to press star to receive messages. Obviously I didn't have the info so tried the switchboard who couldn't help and advised me to call back when the secretary may be there! What a waste of time having an answering machine that unless you know the user id you can't leave a message!
