I slipped on the ice a couple of winters ago and broke my ankle in 3 places. The ambulance service were excellent. I was given Ketamine in A& E so they could manipulate my bones back into position so I couldn't really comment on A&E service although my husband tells me the three people it took to straighten my leg were very good. I was then transfered to a ward where they made sure my leg was non limb threatening, then sent me home to wait for an op to pin it. I was low priority as there were so many other - esp elderly patients - falling and breaking limbs, so I got my surgery after a couple of days which all went fine. I was supposed to have surgery first thing but I got bumped to the end of the day which meant I had nil by mouth for a very long time, but again although it was uncomfortable I understood the situation of the severe weather and the problems they were having in prioritising patients. Subsequent fracture clinic care was fine but slow - be prepared for a long visit for your follow up appointments. A year later I had the metal work removed and again similar experiences. I felt safe but you have to fend for yourself a bit. I had to ask for a bowl to wash and brush my teeth for instance . . . it wasn't offered etc....
