I underwent gynae surgery three years ago to remove multiple polyps from an ovary. I was booked in very quickly as a day case.
Every member of staff who came to see me before the surgery was exceptionally polite and explained everything to me. Both surgical registrars introduced themselves and explained what would happen during the procedure. They were smiling and accessible; very down to earth and caring.
The anaesthetists were brilliant. Someone stroked my hair as I went under the anaesthetic. When I came round, I was cold and remember asking for a blanket. Someone was there straight away to put another blanket on me and check I was alright.
They made me toast and a lovely cup of tea. It was like being at home.
Nobody there knew that I had just come out of three years of domestic violence. I had forgotten what human kindness was, yet I was so touched by the care I received that day that it made me realise I could trust other people again.
The people who work in the NHS are just amazing. The people I met that day treated me with dignity and respect. I was made to feel special. I could have been at a day spa for all I knew! They were that good!
