Right, i'm 66, last time i needed a hospital was when i was about 6 years old to have my tonsils out so my experience of hospitals was zero until recently. I got toothache, well toothache's nothing is it, everybody gets it so i booked in with my dentist. By the time my appointment with the dentist arrived my face had swelled up due to an abscess, she put me on a 5 day course of antibiotics, unfortunately they didn't seem to do much. Back to the dentist who referred me to hospital because my mouth wouldn't open and the swelling had spread up to my eye, round to my ear and even down my neck !. At the hospital a doctor examined me 15 or 20 minutes after arriving, he sent me for an X ray and in less than two hours of arriving i was in the operating theatre where a team of 6 from the Max Fax team were waiting for me. That got me thinking 'this is a bit more serious than i thought !'. they all introduced themselves while i was being hooked up to drips and machines. I can't say anything about what went on because i was under anesthetic. I woke up in a private ward with a nurse sat beside me making sure i was ok, then i was moved to a normal ward. The point of this letter is basically don't believe what you read in the papers or hear on the news that our NHS is 'not fit for purpose' or 'not meeting targets' or 'falling behind other countries' because it's great. The surgeons, nurses, cleaning staff and everybody i had any contact with all work hard and do a fantastic job. Every time the nurse came in my ward they asked everybody " Do you need anything ? have you any pain ?" At night the buzzer by the side of beds to call a nurse for assistance hardly ever stops, nurses are permanently running up and down the corridor, the cleaner even laid on their back to wipe all the bed frames. I can't find any faults with any of the staff, they all go the extra mile and do more than is expected of 'em. To conclude i reckon the government should stop meddling, changing things, setting targets etc, then maybe the staff would get the praise they deserve.
