"93 year old lady admitted last week..."

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital

Anything else?

My grandmother of 93 was admitted a week prior to me writing this review. She came in with a foot requiring sugary/amputation. On entrance to SAU she spent five hours before being seen by anyone, at which point they moved her onto a ward. She has now spent six days in a ward; during which time she has gone down hill, now with trouble affecting her kidneys. I have visited the ward several times, before, during and after visiting hours. The nursing staff seem either too busy or not focused on what they're doing, suffering from severe osteoporosis and arthritis she finds it difficult to feed herself. The basic level of care such as helping her drink water, feeding her and other such simple parts of caring appear absent from this hospital. You can't help but feel if the staff had done their job correctly she would not have had kidney trouble, as she had been fine and very lucid in that regard prior to going in that ward. Some basic things I have noticed: -Blood pressure band left on her arm along time after use. -No straw given to take fluids, leading to dehydration. -I had to support her neck whilst she had a chest X-Ray taken, this should be a nurses job!? -Lack of communication from nurses, doctors and patients family. -No support given for her arthritic condition. -Nurses chatting about reasons why they can't stay and do parts of their job, such as they want to go home or their social life. -Also outside the ward, the toilets smell like worse than a third world sewer; they really are vile! I cannot help but think if she had gone into the conquest hospital at Hastings as opposed to this antiquated maze of confusion; things may have been a lot different. I will be taking this to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

We're extremely concerned to read your comments about your grandmothers experience. As a Trust we are committed to giving the highest quality of care to our patients. This clearly does not correlate with what you describe. In order for us to investigate the serious concerns you raise, we would like the opportunity to discuss them with you more fully. When you are ready, we would appreciate it if you would be willing to contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01323 435886 (or by email on PALSE@esht.nhs.uk). In the meantime we will ensure your comments are passed onto senior nursing staff.
