I attended ward 21 with a freind who was in for a circumcision op.This was his second try at this procedure.He has a terminal fear of hospitals and suffers from severe p.t.s.d. Two years ago he had a horrific experience in which the surgeon tried to operate before the anasthetic had taken hold. We were instructed to attend ward 21 at 7.30.However a hand over between staff made the time of entry nearer to 8.We were pleased to be shown to a private room,a nurse suddenly appeared with no hello or introduction,wanting to ask questions take weight etc,this had already been done a few days before at his pre op appointment. When we explained this we were told the notes had been "lost".An hour or so later a nurse appeared and shunted him into a four bed room.His stress levels were getting worse by this time,whenever we politly asked when his op would be we were met with a "ive got no idea".Obviously a rehearsed phrase to keep patients guessing.No eye contact or freindleness from anyone on this ward,making you feel invisible.After being on the ward for 5 hours,still no answers were being given.My freind had to take on a firmer approach and threatned to leave if something did not happen soon. A receptionist informed us they were on the way up to get him,maybe they took the long route as even that took half an hour.Finally after 12 he was taken for the op,I must say the ansthetic people and surgeons were very kind and helpfull and made his op stress free. However after this op he was moved to recovery for three hours as there was no bed in ward21! I was left waiting in ward 21 and asked a few times if there was any news on him just to be told the usual "dont know" by a woman who looked furious that she had been asked.Obvisously making me concerened something was wrong.We finally left the hospital around 6.Making it an eleven hour visit for a simple quick op. On the flip side the Anesthatist and surgeons were very proffesional and polite and made his op stress free by explaining everything step by step. So all in all,proffesional polite theatre staff.Rude nursing staff who would be more suited working in a mortuary with less chance of offending the pateint.
