"Emergency admission"

About: Leighton Hospital

Anything else?

I was admitted by my GP last week as an emergency, i had been in a month prior with the same problem and received some tests which did not help to diagnose the problem. I was willing to go home and receive further treatment via my GP and see if the problem would dissapear. Unfortunately it didn't and my GP was increasingly concerned so wanted some more tests and checks done as i was unable to eat without being in intense pain and oramorph was failing to control it. Upon my admital it took two days for the doctor to prescribe my regular medication so i was in agony as i missed my antispasmodic and a very important SSRI which you are not supposed to miss a dose of, i ended up in a really bad way with shakes and headaches and vomiting. The consultant who came round to see me was incredibly rude. He said it was too soon to do anymore tests and there was no clinical reason for me to be there. He then asked what pain releif i was on and proceeded to shout at me for being on severe pain releif as i was too young (i'm 25) to be taking such things. He refused to help and said i should go home. He did want the pain team to see me though as i was on too much pain releif in his opinion. After he left i had to have a nurse with me for nearly half an hour to calm me down as i was having a panic attack due to his manner and my worry about returning home to cope with this problem. I finally managed to breathe properly and calm down enough to see the pain mangement team. The pain management gentleman that came to see me was really sympathetic and a godsend. He doubled my oramorph dose and frequency to help keep things under control (shows how right the consultant was!) and the best i could get was an outpatients appointment for which i am still waiting. My GP is furious about her request being refused and i am not coping well with this at all. I am in the process of making a formal complaint as i am still having anxiety attacks about my treatment.

We are extremely concerned about your experience as an emergency admission to our hospital in June, particularly around the attitude towards your pain relief and the responses given by the staff. I acknowledge that you are in the process of making a formal complaint, but would invite you to contact me so that we can discuss your experience and investigate the delay in obtaining your Outpatient Appointment. Once again we are extremely sorry that you have had such a negative experience at our hospital and can assure you that your comments are taken seriously as our aim is to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care .
