"Thank You very much for what you ..."

About: Lister Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Thank You very much for what you have done for my husband. Without the doctors in A&E, HDU, Medical Students, Ward 8A North and South and Hertsdoc and Stoma Care and finally the doctor and their team, my husband would not be alive today!!!!!

I had brought my husband to Hertsdoc as he was having trouble with his stomach, they were very thorough and called Urology to say that they needed to see him asap.

The care that he recieved was second to none. The two med students left no stone unturned.

After 4 weeks in hospital, 2 days in HDU, 7hrs in theatre near death in theatre and an extremely thin husband, my 3 children and I are so lucky that he is still with us as things could have been different should I have waited any longer to bring him in.

Left down to our GP who said that "the pain was in his head" he would have died!! It was a very stressfull time for us and it was nice to know that someone would listen and answer any questions that we had and allay any fears or worries that we had.

What could be improved

Two small moans, sorry. Firstly, Triage. The nurse told my husband that he should have gone to his GP, when we tried to explain what the doctor had said about coming back as soon as any of his symptoms returned , they tried to argue with us.

Also my husband provided a sample that contained nothing but blood, they rudely spoke to me as to where his sample was. When I explained that his sample was on their desk that contained blood they soon changed their attitude.

Secondly, the food. Throughout my husband's stay, the food looked unedible and he complained to me on many occasions and when the survey was being carried out. He needed to aid his recovery and when he felt well enough to eat, he asked if I could bring food in from home as he felt unable to eat the hospital food. Please ask Jamie Oliver to help out. I know you are on a limited budget but think of your patients who are weak and are in need of decent food

Thank you so much for all your kind words about the care your husband received while in our hospital – although we note with concern the comments about your initial experience while in A&E. We have made sure that all your feedback – good and not so good – has been with the relevant teams.

With regard to the meals we provide, we are sorry that you and your husband were not satisfied with the food during his stay. Members of our catering team are always happy to meet with any patient and/or their relatives to discuss their experience. All our food is sourced from accredited suppliers to national quality specifications. Our menus have been assessed by qualified dieticians and included dishes developed as part of the Better Hospital Food scheme.

Clearly it is better that where people have concerns about the meals we provide that this happens while patients are still in hospital. The best way to do this is to request a visit from the catering staff via the nurse in charge of your ward. Alternatively you discuss this - or any other issue - further with our patient advice and liaison (PALS) team by calling them on 01438 784779.
