About: Leatherhead Hospital

Anything else?

My ECG result reads that I have a pacemaker. This is not the case. I am anorexic. Also, it was extremely rushed. I doubt they got an accurate reading. The nurse was nice and the doctor was ok, but very dismissive of the effect that anorexia could have on the heart, also of the effect that 3 coffees could have had on my heart rate. (With a bmi of 14, i think they could have quite an effect... my blood pressure was normal, this is not usually the case.)

Response from Leatherhead Hospital

Thank you for your posting – I’m sorry to read that you weren’t happy with your recent visit to the Community assessment unit at Leatherhead Hospital. The Clinical Manager has assured me that the ECG report prints automatically with the ‘pacemaker setting’ showing (this is a default setting and does not mean the machine thought you had a pacemaker). It must have been confusing and concerning to see the words pacemaker on your print out and I’m sorry this setting wasn’t pointed out to you at the time. You should have been given the reading to take away, to give to your GP at your next appointment (a copy is sent electronically to the GP). Your GP can refer you for another ECG if they want the result confirmed, or for further tests if required. I am sorry that you left the unit with concerns. If you need to go back for a repeat ECG or other tests, ask as many questions as you want to; the staff there can explain what is happening and what they are looking for. I’m asking the team to make patients aware of the wording on the printed read out from now on. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention, it is a good reminder for us all to see the patients' side of an experience that can seem routine to the people performing the task. If you have any other questions about your visit I would be happy to hear from you, you can email me on: tessa.webb@nhs.net Kind regards Tessa Webb Community and Patient Involvement Co-ordinator
