New Wells Road Centre Carers Strategy

Change from Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Posted by on

About: Forensic mental health / Low secure services

Dear All,

We have recently reviewed our strategy for keeping Friends and Relatives involved and informed about patient care and the service we provide at The Wells Road Centre. The following issues are ways in which we feel we will achieve this.

If you are a Friend or Relative (Carer) to a patient at The Wells Road Centre you can expect the following from our strategy:

  • We will ensure your friend/relative has an updated ‘Carer contact plan’. This contains details of how we will engage with you.  Named Nurses will discuss this with you and your friend/relative to look at what this plan will include.

  • The Involvement Manager (Gregg Murray) will be a single point of contact for unresolved issues regarding concerns you have raised or are unsure of who to speak to.

  • We will keep you updated on events such as the ‘Family and Friends Forum’ which takes place quarterly and we have listened to your requests to include more of a social aspect. We will also inform you of any actions taken on the feedback you have given us.

  • We will hold quarterly ward open days and large social events to which you will be invited.

  • We have listened to your request for ‘Activity visits’ with your friend/relative. We will be including this issue in our upcoming carers survey and you will have the opportunity to tell us what you would like this to include.

  • Our Social Work department will engage with you at key points of your friend/relatives journey. This includes at assessment, admission, CPAs and Discharge. You can request to meet with your friend/relatives Responsible Clinician if you have any specific questions regarding their care.

  • Staff will undertake Recovery based training which will better inform them of the issues you face as a carer.

  • We will conduct a telephone survey to give you an opportunity to give your opinion on your involvement and experiences as a carer to your friend/relative whilst they have been at the Wells Road Centre. This will enable us to review further how actively and effectively we involve you and how this can be improved upon in the future.

  • Our Social work Department can signpost you to local Carer Advocacy services and support you with this if required.

  • We will post feedback we receive onto the ‘Patient Opinion’ website where appropriate to ensure that your views are heard on a wider level. This ensures our service is open and honest.  You can find the Patient Opinion Website at www.patientopinion.org.uk

If you have any comments or suggestions on our involvement strategy then please let me know.

Thanks

Gregg Murray

Thank you for sharing your update on the Patient Opinion Blog. I have forwarded this to our Carers Families and Friends Strategy Group who are responsible for implementing the wider Trust strategy and the  Triangle of Care and shared it on Twitter

It's great to see you are using the Patient Opinion blog to share what you are doing in Low Secure Services.

I have invited carers and staff to respond to your blog too.

Thanks Gregg

Thats great thanks!

I must say Gregg your 10 point approach to include Carers and Families are brilliant...

Offering a one to one service when things are not going so well is always the best way of resolving issues I feel...

Mental Health is a scary thing to be plunged into for the first time and making it a friendlier service is going to eliminate a lot of that fear...

To find a service willing to go that extra mile is a breath of fresh air Gregg...

As a Carer, I admire your understanding and commitment...

Thank you Trevor that's much appreciated.  It is good to hear that this approach may go some way to reducing barriers, during what can be very difficult times for people.

''This is a good step forward for families and carers and will be seen as helpful. I know we should be embracing social media such as blogs  but I am sure some people would prefer contact by telephone or letter. Many carers I know still do not have computers, iPhones etc.

Sorry I should have mentioned that the strategy has been sent to all friends and family members attached to the service via mail.  We are also planning to contact people via phone with a quick survey on the items we are trying to meet in the strategy.

For example to discover how much training might be an issue we will ask "in your experience how well equipped are staff at understanding and responding to your needs?"

I included this on the blog to open it up to the opinions of the wider community as well (which appears to be paying off).

Thanks

Gregg
