As we are now 10 days away from opening our new Theatre Block we've just been having an open day for staff - about 50 colleagues turned up for the first tour which was fantastic.

The new theatre block includes four new theatres, including two with state-of-the-art Laminar Flow.   The next phase of our theatres project is to completely modernise all our existing theatres.  This will take about 18 months and will mean that we end up with all theatres fuly-modernised and ready for the next 20 years of use.

One of the interesting elements of the first phase was having to get a licence to move some Great Crested Newts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_crested_newt as they are a protected species.  We had great support from Natural England and our newts now have a new pond and re-modelled existing ponds - we try to be a good neighbour to everyone!

Finally we have also taken the opportunity in the new theatre block to inlcude new staff showers and a new bicycle storage zone which are open to all staff who want to use "greener" travel options.
