My mum was admitted to the assessment unit in November & taken to a bay & then transferred to ARU 3. Prior to transfer my dad told the on duty nurse that my mum was petrified of lifts, if they were going to move her. I thought this was why she was moved but remained on ground floor.
Her medication was given in tablet form & she definitely looked & felt better the following day. She thought she may get home on the Sunday. We visited her on the Sunday & she was upbeat & felt better.
On Sunday night my dad received a call from the hospital to say my mum was distressed & upset because she was being moved at 10:00 clock at night to another room on the upper floor. Myself & my dad arrived at the hospital before 11:00 and my mum was crying & wanted home.
A doctor was with my mum & was speaking to her, the nurses were apologising to us & clearly quite exasperated But they were brilliant at consoling and calming her down. That decision clearly didn't come from them because they were aware of my mum's anxiety. That decision was from above, who ever? Seemingly someone detached & who does not listen.
That decision caused distress to my mum, us & the nursing staff, who were it seems to me not given the chance to be heard & give their professional opinion. They knew the situation & clearly had a better handle of it. What a travesty that not only are the patients not listened to but the nursing staff. They were completely professional & were such a comfort to my mum. Quite frankly, they were the only positive in this whole sorry mess.
I've witnessed decision makers who are so detached from the personal side of caring, it appears to be lost. Thank God for the nurses who have a human side & it showed. Those nurses should never have had to apologise & face the family. No wonder they are leaving the NHS - it must be soul destroying.
Listen to the patients - they are people, and listen to the nursing staff, they are people who are valued & much needed & appreciated.... it appears just not by their higher up so called colleagues.
The nurses were a testament to how the NHS should be & all the good they do. Who ever made that decision got it spectacularly wrong & should apologise to us & their colleagues. This is how it should not be.
