"Epilepsy specialist nursing services"

About: Trust wide Neurology Services / Nurse Led Adult Epilepsy Service

(as a service user),

Nurse led Neurology Service in Armagh - I attended the epilepsy specialist nursing service. It was a face to face appointment which was good as I was  diagnosed with epilepsy 2 years ago due to a cavernoma of the brain. It was very informative and I felt it was individually tailored with an initial assessment and a personal action plan.

I was informed of all the support available to me and it was explained how I could access as much or little support as I felt needed. This was useful as epilepsy is something that when a seizure does happen new questions can arise. Also it was reassuring to know that they are only a phone call away and that they work along side the epilepsy consultant should there be other concerns.

I feel this service being available in Armagh for those with epilepsy is key as often people with epilepsy cannot drive. It made attending the appointment more pleasant for me as it in my home town. I also received an Epilepsy Information pack which has all links information in it . However this would have been more of lifeline if I had received this 2 years ago. This pack should be given to those who have a seizure for the first time within a week as it is at that time which is scariest and all the questions are that need answered. It probably has taken 2 years for me to have my first appointment due to covid to be fair!

But a great service, great nurses, great information but all needed at the right time.

Thank you for your feedback.

The epilepsy service is pleased that you had a good experience at the nurse led clinic in Armagh. We aim to offer a venue as close to an individual's home address as we can as we know how difficult it can be to access appointments when a person does not drive and may be dependent on others. I am glad that you felt supported and informed at the epilepsy nurse led clinic and feel reassured about accessing epilepsy support for the future. We will continue to focus the epilepsy nurse led clinics to meet the individual needs of anyone who accesses the service.

We understand that a new diagnosis of epilepsy can be very difficult and there is so much information to digest. It is our aim to see people with a new diagnosis as soon as possible and within two weeks of referral to the Epilepsy nursing service. In response to your suggestion of having the epilepsy information pack within one week of diagnosis, the epilepsy service will provide epilepsy information packs and will request that the consultant neurologist will share with individuals who have a new diagnosis of epilepsy, whilst awaiting an appointment with the epilepsy nursing service.
