"Lovely staff"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Paediatric Assessment Unit (Children's Assessment Unit)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter got admitted to hospital at the weekend.

Despite a lengthy wait for doctors in A and E her nurse who couldn’t of been more helpful always making sure we were both alright. I appreciate the doctors are extremely busy in a&e but the doctor we seen I felt had no empathy towards my daughter and there was a lack of communication to what was happening.

We got moved through to PAU and got a new nurse who was lovely, again always coming in to make sure we were both alright and talking my daughter through everything that was happening. The Dr came in to go through everything with us and put a cannula in and I thought it wasn’t going to go well as my daughter in the past has had very bad experiences with doctors and cannulas however, this Doctor was so calm and consoling and managed to distract my daughter whilst it was happening. The next morning we had a new nurse who was so caring, my daughter had been on a drip for fluids and after being taken off them it was extremely difficult to try and get her to drink again. This nurse spent so much time trying lots of different ways to get her to drink and eventually managed. I hope all these nurses/dr see this just to let them know they are doing a fantastic job and I appreciate everything you done for us during our stay.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback on your experiences within our Emergency Care Department at the Children's Hospital in Aberdeen. I was delighted to hear that nursing staff throughout kept you updated on what was happening with your daughters care and they took time to help your daughter manage some oral fluids. I was also very pleased that the medical staff who put in the cannula were skilled at distraction techniques and managed to not only get the cannula in, but just as importantly not stress your daughter with the experience. If you wish to e-mail me on sue.danby@nhs.scot with your child's name and admission date, I can ensure that all the staff directly involved with her care get this feedback. Feedback from those we care for is so powerful and will really serve to reinforce the message that they are doing a great job. I note also that you felt the medical staff who saw you in the Emergency Department did not communicate as effectively or show the empathy that is all so important in making families feel understood and valued. I will ensure this gets passed on so they are able to understand what it was like from your perspective and can seek to improve on this.

Kind regards

Sue Danby
