"Bilateral Discectomy in jaw joint"

About: Ninewells Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

Last July I had both discs removed from my jaw joints due to them disintegrating.

My surgeon removed them and my surgery experience was first class.

Unfortunately, after my surgery the care on the 1st night to keep my pain under control was non existent. I asked time and time again for pain relief and was told by the nurse I will see what we can do. I was prescribed oral morphine every 4 hours and was given none through out the night. I had a terrible sleepless night and no relief.

The next morning when my surgeon came to see me discovering I had been given very little after care and prescribed regular pain relief, they were shocked and very disappointed and apologised on the night shift nurses lack of care. This was not my surgeons fault and was out of their control. I was left in severe pain, distressed and very upset.

I am soon due bilateral jaw replacement surgery where my surgeon will also break my upper jaw and realign it and I will be given 2 dental implants. To say I am worried about my aftercare and pain relief is an understatement. I just pray that this next surgery will be a much better experience and I will be given the pain relief that has been prescribed.

I would like to add that my surgeon is amazing and my incisions healed extremely well. I always feel very safe knowing they are my surgeon. I cannot fault them. They are an asset to the NHS.
