My Mother was admitted to Gartnavel General Glasgow ward 6c nearly 11 weeks ago. She got home today thankfully.
After breaking her hip she was admitted for rehabilitation. It was a slow process getting her to be fit to be discharged, she was very shaken suffered delirium after her fall which was awful. She had UTIs and was generally very poorly and became withdrawn.
She had been on morphine for pain for a previous injury to her back. To be honest the morphine did help with her pain initially but made her very withdrawn and extremely lethargic.
After a few weeks and talking to staff i.e. Ward sister and staff nurses and them getting to know my mum, we worked together to get her off these meds slowly and monitoring her pain. Slowly I started to get my mum back her mind and her determination.
The staff listened to what I was saying and worked so well at providing the specific care my mum needed. At times she became very down and we looked at ways of getting her spirits back up. Through time patience and working together we where able to get mum ready for discharge, everyone was excited.
Then Mum got Covid, that put her discharge back nearly 2 weeks her oxygen levels where low. But through the disappointment Mum got through and reached her discharge date.
Home today getting her settled she is living with me now. All aids that mum required for coming home were provided to support her rehabilitation. Hope her journey continues to be positive at home with her family.
The staff in the ward do listen and take on board what family says. That is so important, so if you have a family member in Ward 6C please don’t be afraid to ask and question, they will listen, don’t feel silly either. As they said to me, we know our family members better than they do. They need to build a picture and fit all the jigsaw bits back together.
Thank you again to all the staff in Ward 6c for looking after and caring for my mum.
