"Experience in Tiverton Emergency Department"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Trauma and orthopaedics Tiverton and District Hospital

(as the patient),

I’m very disappointed about misdiagnosis in emergency department.

I arrived with hand trauma and asked for x ray .

I couldn’t use 2 fingers without having pain and not fully and had small swelling but lump on hand.

Because I knew what to do after accident, I avoided big bruises and swelling and that probably led to misdiagnosis.

I could touch the hand.

After x-ray was told IT IS NOT broken and it’s strained and can go home.

Didn’t offer me any bandages or tape to put fingers together. After I insisted, was told I can do myself and put quickly 2 small tapes not accurate on.

I was in shock because I knew it’s broken by symptoms I had.

Because hand is not broken, I needed to return to work.

I went home and done taping and bought a glove to protect the hand and limit the movement on last 2 fingers.

After 2 weeks I’m getting a call from Exeter Fracture Clinic and asking me to attend because My hand is broken and I have a tumour in hand also which requires operation after fracture heals.

Because I done NHS job and secured the hand and started movement in 10 days for joints - I saved it.

Doctors told I done exact step right and NHS should be paying me.

I felt proud about myself but disappointed in NHS .

How this even could happen? My guess - no X-ray was checked because results don’t arrive so fast :)

This is misdiagnosis and it’s a serious matter .
