"Getting an ECG"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Combined Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

I went in for an ECG last week which was the first time I’ve ever received one of these. The person that completed this task was polite and cheery upon my arrival. There were no notes in my letter that would indicate that I needed to remove clothing but I put on a loose shirt and bralet that would allow for comfort and reduce restriction. My father and grandfather have both received ECG’s in the past and when talking to them they both said that the procedure I was getting was quick and non invasive.

Once in the room I had been given no verbal information to the task at hand, no consent was obtained and I was told to strip off from the waist up. I did this bar my bralet and when I turned around I was told to take this off too. I was a bit shocked but went along to get out as soon as possible.

I felt very uncomfortable and covered my breasts with my hands. I was told to lie on the table and remove my hands and put them to my side. I wasn’t given anything to cover my breasts and the person doing the ECG began to attach the wires - whilst moving my breast with their hands without asking for my permission. I felt horrible and very exposed. I sat for only a short while but it felt like an eternity and I felt myself become more and more anxious.

I was told to sit still as I was moving too much and it was affecting the results. I have had lots of procedures at my hospital due to a chronic illness (like a lumbar puncture, infusions and MRI’s) that have been more relaxing/positive experiences at the same hospital. This is the first time I’ve had an issue like this here.

Dear Kajuva,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I am sorry to hear that you felt anxious during your procedure, this is not how we aim to make our patients feel. I would also like to apologise for the lack of communication before and during your ECG.

Our staff are trained to maintain your dignity at all times and I am sorry that this did not happen for you. I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the relevant teams for the purpose of reflection and to ensure that this does not happen again either to you or any other patient.

If you would like to reach out to us to discuss this further please contact the Patient Experience Team at dg.dgpatientexperience@nhs.scot.

Thank you again for sharing your story and I am sorry that your experience was not of the standard we would aim to provide for our patients.

Kind regards

Alexis
