"Labour Divert"

About: Maternity care / Maternity care (Ward 31) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Maternity care

(as a service user),

Called the RAH Maternity Triage at around 1am to make them aware that my partner was in labour, considered a high risk, consultant lead pregnancy.

We were made aware that due to staff shortages a hospital divert was in place, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Govan. My partner who suffers from anxiety and a fear of this pregnancy ending in a C-section due to her last pregnancy ending in a C-section due to trauma resulting from events with her last pregnancy.

The trauma of being diverted to a totally unfamiliar hospital, the trauma of being in an open triage unit, paper curtains while discussing extremely private medical history and being able to hear other pregnant woman in distress feels totally inappropriate and uncompassionate? My partners labour ended with us being sent home again, high risk, consultant lead? We seen a very stressed midwife only.

To me it's clear that this was the result of mismanagement from senior management and should never have been allowed to happen.

Dear shuddersy48,

I am sorry to read about you and you partner's recent experience at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and that this felt uncompassionate and traumatic.

It is very rare that we request that a woman in labour attends an alternative unit to the one in which she expects to give birth and this is only done with careful consideration where an unpredicted peak in clinical activity occurs in order to ensure the safe and effective care of women and their babies.

If you or your partner wish to discuss the care in more detail and enable an opportunity for us to make any improvements, please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to have a conversation with you both.

Best wishes
