"Quiet time on the ward"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Paediatric Day Patient Ward

(as a service user),

My child has been on the Childrens ward in the Ulster. Firstly I must commend the staff, they have all been excellent with him and very attentive to his care. We have had a positive experience during a worrying time. Unfortunately on the ward FaceTime calls (with no headphones so you can hear both sides of the conversation) hve continued well past midnight for 2/3 nights in a row and until about 930 other times. This is not helpful for sick babies. I have raised the issue with staff but I understand it’s hard for them to police also. Perhaps visuals on the ward so people of all backgrounds can understand when quiet time on the ward should be - preferably from 8/9pm.

My husband and I have another child to look after so when we swap out we usually have her with us meaning we do a 30 second corridor swap as we didn’t think other children would be allowed on the wards. However one family had a second child with them all day from around 2-8pm who interrupted the nurses asking for juice! My child would have loved a quick hello to her brother to help her understand where he is as it is a confusing time for her but we thought best to not have her come to the ward with other sick children. We would just like rules to be the same for all the families.

I understand this is difficult and hard for staff during their busy working days. We have been very well looked after by the staff

Hi GPC2019

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience with your child. I'm pleased to learn that your experience of their care was positive and I hope they are feeling better now.

Being in hospital can be a very stressful time and we aim to provide an environment conducive to rest whilst meeting the clinical needs of each child, however we are aware that is not always the case and we apologise for this. We are currently in the process of developing an information leaflet for parents/carers that will be given on admission encouraging things such as the use of headphones and the implemention of quiet time. This will also include information on restricted visiting due to infection control.

As you have alerted us to what has happened on this specific occasion staff will be reminded of the current visiting policy and the implementation of quiet time each day.

Best wishes

Emma
