"Feeling uncomfortable at vaccination centre"

About: Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership / Covid Vaccination Service

(as a service user),

I am writing to tell you about my experience at Scotstown Medical Group Vaccination Centre, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen.

I went with my elderly mum to support her vaccination appointment today with my 8 month old baby. Whist waiting to be called into the nurse's room, my baby became fussy. I sat down on one of the chairs to feed her, and one of the facilitators told me I could not sit there, and asked me to go into a room to feed her for "privacy".

I was a bit taken aback, considering there were also non-patients sitting on chairs (those who accompanied patients), and I thought being an NHS building that they would be breastfeeding friendly.

I reluctantly went into the room, and asked how I would know know when my mum will be called through.  They told me they would get me, not to worry, and patted me on the shoulder.

I did not wanted to be touched, and felt I was being patronised.

I hope this is made aware to the centre, and the staff, and that future parents do not feel ashamed or uncomfortable for feeding their babies.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your experience at our Vaccination Centre at Bridge of Don. I understand our Clinical Team Leader has also been in touch with you to discuss this further and feedback has been provided to the member of staff concerned along with promoting Breastfeeding Awareness Training.

Staff within all of our vaccination centres have been distributed information about Breastfeeding Awareness and supporting mothers as part of the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Scheme to help promote the importance of breastfeeding in our communities.

I sincerely apologise on behalf of our service with regards to your experience at the Centre. The team will send our further information and guidance to our staff and highlight this within our next Staff Newsletter & future staff training events for further promotion & awareness.

Many thanks

Caroline Anderson, Programme Manager

Aberdeen City Vaccination Centre
