"A shining example"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Following a horrific experience of birth with my first child in 2018 at another hospital, I was left with emotional, mental and physical trauma which has plagued my mental health ever since and very nearly stopped me from having a 2nd child. After some counselling, we decided to try for a second child in the hope the experience would be different in Ayrshire & Arran.

From the minute I was placed under the care of Dr Anderson I felt instantly reassured. She was exceptional in helping me to overcome the barriers that were impacting me enjoying my pregnancy. She listened, was empathetic and signposted me to services which would help me to begin to overcome the effects of my first birth.

A planned c-section was decided by Dr Anderson and on the day, my experience of the Ayrshire Maternity Unit was first class. From arrival in the morning to discharge, I did not encounter any member of the team, whether it be a Doctor, Midwife, Nurse or Nursing Assistant who did not have an exceptional bedside manner.

The experience of my c-section was polar opposite to the one experienced in 2018. Dr Gibson who performed the section and Dr McGarrity, the Anaesthetist were outstanding in their approach, manner and professionalism and made me feel at ease throughout the entire experience - I cannot express my gratitude enough to Drs Anderson, Gibson and McGarrity for the way in which they treated me. I will be forever grateful to them and the team involved in the birth of my son and my pre and post operative care for ensuring I had the most positive birthing experience.

The extended team around these Doctors were also absolutely amazing and I cannot thank them all enough for everything.

The whole team involved in looking after me throughout my pregnancy until discharge have been an absolute credit to the NHS, Ayrshire & Arran health board and to Maternity Services; every one of them is a shining example of how professionals within this specialism should conduct themselves. There are so many out there who could learn so much from this team.

Thank you so much.
