"On behalf of my dad…"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Plastic Surgery & Burns Ninewells Hospital / Xrays and scans Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Orthopaedic Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My dad, in his seventies, unfortunately had an incident with a circular saw which resulted in him attending A&E at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.

He did have a bit of a wait where his blood loss became very noticeable. He was then triaged by Malcolm who implemented all necessary X-rays, bloods and cleaned the hand. One finger had been sliced off (taken in a box) and the other three fingers were severely damaged.

After a telephone consult by the attending doctor to his colleagues at Ninewells, it was agreed dad would go to Ward 126 in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee for review by the plastic surgeons. This done, he was consented for surgery the following day. After approximately 3 hours of surgery where nerves, fractures and tissue repair were undertaken, he was sent back to the ward and discharged the next day.

Subsequent appointments over the past couple of weeks with physiotherapy, the orthopedic nurse specialist and his own practice nurse have resulted in dad having a very positive outcome from what could have been a poor prognosis.

As a family, we are fully aware of the pressures all staff are under at this time, however this was never reflected in the care received. Dad would like to express his sincere thanks to all involved in his care. He has been treated with respect, compassion and professionalism at all times and has also enjoyed the banter this accident invoked. Unfortunately, there have been too many names to remember individually but include the following departments: A&E Victoria Hospital, Ward 126 Ninewells Hospital, X-ray departments, Theatre and Anaesthetics, consultants, practice nurses, specialist nurses and physiotherapy you have all shown why we are so lucky to have an NHS, credit given to you all.

Dear KandB

Thank you for taking your time to leave us feedback regarding your Dad's recent presentation to our Emergency Department. What a terrible accident for your Dad to endure, it is good to note that Malcom was able to triage and refer your Dad onto the appropriate specialist team in Dundee recongising the emergency nature of the injury. I will ensure Malcom sees your feedback, he will be very grateful. Myself and the team do hope your Dad is recovering well after such a traumatic ordeal and hope it has not affected any of his upcoming DIY plans. Please pass on our well wishes to him. Take care and thank you again.

Jamie Doyle, Emergency Department, Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, NHS Fife.
