"Patronising the elderly"

About: Falkirk Community Hospital / Older peoples' services

(as the patient),

75 years old. Recently widowed.

Attend Falkirk Community Hospital every 3 months.

As usual arrived at the outpatients ramp in the morning. A member of staff told me, in an abrupt manner, that I was in the wrong place and to go down stairs and follow signs.

After getting lost with no staff about I returned to where I started....quite a trek.

The same member of staff then tells me again, in what I felt was a slow, patronising voice, to go downstairs and follow the signs.

I felt stupid. Very stupid.

I appreciate people can have a bad day but why work in a hospital when you have no time for the elderly? I'm still pretty upset at this treatment. The way they spoke to me I felt patronised me and was hurtful and ruined my whole day.

Hello Gabtw39

Thank you for sharing your experience when you attended Falkirk Community Hospital. It is always disappointing when we do not meet our patients' expectations and I am saddened to read how that staff member's behaviour and attitude made you feel.

I can only apologise for your experience as it does not match the values held by our staff. Communication is the corner stone of patient care and the services we provide. It is funny how the small moments during our day can have such a large impact and I am sad that this experience had such an effect on your day.

Kind regards

Caroline
