"Communication of visiting procedures"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Medical Assessment Unit (MAU)

(as a service user),

I brought loved one to RAH medical assessment unit as agreed with go. A lovely nurse took him in and gave me ward phone number and said to call if I needed anything.   Phoned ward to arrange to bring in loved ones clothes (on a Sunday) and was told I had to come in one hour slot (but not how to arrange the slot).  Mutually agreed I could come in the morning as it was a quick drop off on the weekend.

I came in next day at 1:00pm, not knowing I was supposed to ‘book’ first. Luckily there weren’t other people visiting at that time in the room, so the visit went ahead.  I asked if I could book a permanent 1:00pm slot to fit around other caring duties and was told this was impossible as he might be moved ward (I don’t see why it couldn’t just be cancelled if that happened).

I would love to have been given a written note about visiting arrangements when I first arrived, so all my misunderstandings would have been prevented. Also please consider exemptions of visiting hours for informal carers as is policy in the QUEH.

Thanks.

Dear fish and whistle

Thank you for your feedback on Care Opinion, I'm sorry your experience in relation to MAU visiting was not a positive one with your relative, I apologise on behalf of the staff involved.

I have since spoken to all the staff within MAU in relation to current protocol within NHS GGC. I circulated an update from the Core Brief, in regard to visiting on our site several weeks ago within our own teams and was disappointed to hear that this was not offered on this occasion. Please be advised I have re circulated this as well as highlighting this on daily safety briefs within the unit for staff awareness.

Please be advised a maximum of two visitors can attend visiting at any one time to support relative/patient and be part of their ongoing care. This is in line with delivering patient centred care and implementing the NHS Core Values at all times. We also have local policies in relation to additional support required for any carer in line with The Carers Scotland Act 2016. Further information can be accessed at www.nhsggc.scot.carers

If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me directly
