I was taken to A&E by my carers because I was weak from not eating or drinking very well. With the nurses and the doctors we came up with a plan, after a long wait, of IV fluids and temporary NG feeding.
All was sorted and the NG tube placed and the feed was just being set up when the consultant started shouting at the staff outside, saying to other staff not to tell them what to do with a patient. The consultant came storming in and demanded that they stop what they were doing because there was no way they were going to offer NG nutrition, despite the fact other doctors I’d seen had agreed it, and told them they could finish my drip but then to discharge me.
I got so upset I took out the NG tube and IV line myself and I said if they weren’t prepared to help me properly, I didn’t want their IV line just to tide me over. The nurse tried what they could but ultimately couldn’t do anything. I was unable to walk and wheelchair bound due to being so weak.
The consultant didn’t even bother speaking to me, to even ask what was wrong. It adds to the stigma that eating disorders are weight disorders when they are not. Won’t be going back willingly at all, just to be treated awfully for something I can’t control.
