"My sister in law is fraught and alarmed at the care failings"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / Vascular surgery

(as a relative),

My brother is currently on ITU at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI). He suffered a Covid infection at MRI following a kidney transplant a few weeks ago, as a result of obvious poor infection control measures. He was sent home to Kendal, still covid positive but deteriorated and was eventually transfered back to MRI, where he had antibiotics. These have not worked and he has a suspected lung abscess.  He's now in Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU).

I live 4 hours away and rely on my sister in law for information. She lives 2 1/2 hours away, does not drive a can only travel once or twice weekly to visit.

The hospital have been supremely unhelpful, unable to provide accurate information or call back to provide updates as promised.

When my sister in law visited today (ward 7) he was not there: (he had been transferred to ITU and they hadn't been told). My sister in law thought he'd died. When the ward eventually found out where he was, my sister in law found him seriously unwell in ITU. The ward had also not passed on to ITU that my brother had been delirious (and as a clinical specialist in that area, I'm only too aware of how life threatening that can be).

My sister in law is fraught and alarmed at the care failings, bordering medical neglect!

Matron Horrocks was disappointed to hear of the poor communication you and your sister in law experienced from ward 7 with relation to your brother.

The staff on ward 7 should have contacted your sister in law to provide an update and to inform her that your brother was being transferred. Matron Horrocks and Ward Manager Carabini would like to apologise that this did not happen. This feedback will be shared with the team on ward 7 and the importance of good communication and updates will be reiterated to the team. If you would like to discuss your experience with us in a more detail, please call (PALS) on 0161 276 8686, referencing PO22/0092 or by e-mailing pals@mft.nhs.uk. They will put you in contact with a senior member of the team to discuss your concerns.
